The SECO 00098982 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNMG433-MR3 series, finished with a multilayer PVD TiAlN and TiN coating under the manufacturer grade designation CP500. The insert features a 90-degree square shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. With 8 cutting edges, a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0472-inch corner radius, it is engineered for productive material removal in CNC turning, boring, and facing operations. The MR3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip flow during medium cutting conditions. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is suited for turning stainless steel as its primary workpiece material, with secondary capability in steel, cast iron, and super-alloys including titanium. It is applied in external and internal turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The negative rake geometry and 0-degree relief angle make it compatible with rigid toolholding setups. Material grades M10, M20, and M30 define its recommended cutting condition range, covering roughing through semi-finishing passes on challenging materials. The SNMG form factor allows mounting via clamp, pin, or lever lock toolholders.
Designed for use in SNMG-style toolholders accepting clamp, pin, or lever lock holding methods with a 0.2028-inch hole diameter. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards; ISO code SNMG120412-MR3 and industry standard number SNMG433-MR3 apply for cross-referencing compatible holders.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and spindle locked. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before clamping to ensure proper edge presentation and runout control. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw or lever lock mechanism. Inspect the insert pocket and seating shim for wear or debris before seating a new edge.
