The SECO 00096863 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting in CNC turning, boring, and facing operations. Manufactured to the CNMP431-MF1 industry standard, it carries a CP500 grade designation with a multilayer PVD-applied TiAlN and TiN coating for extended tool life. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 1/64 inch corner radius, and a 3/16 inch thickness. The MF1 chip breaker geometry targets finishing applications. With four cutting edges and neutral hand orientation, it suits high-production turning setups run by machinists and CNC operators working in job-shop and production environments.
This insert is suited for finishing passes on stainless steel, steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. It is classified under primary workpiece material codes P, K, and S, indicating grade characteristics that balance moderate to high wear-resistance with toughness across these material groups. Typical applications include external and internal turning, facing, and boring where controlled chip formation and surface finish consistency are required. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry pair with rigid toolholding setups to maintain dimensional accuracy during high-feed finishing cuts.
Designed for use in CNMP-style toolholders accepting a 431 ANSI size code insert with clamp, pin, or lever lock holding methods. ISO equivalent size code is 120404. Suitable for toolholders rated for negative-rake, 80-degree diamond inserts with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Confirm the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening clamp screws — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide substrate. Always verify runout and tool offset settings after indexing to a fresh cutting edge.
