The SECO 00096861 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNGP series, designed for precision finishing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch (0.0157 inch) corner radius. It carries a TiAlN and TiN multilayer PVD coating applied under the CP500 manufacturer grade, which balances wear resistance and toughness across steel, cast iron, and superalloy workpieces. With four cutting edges and a neutral hand orientation, the 00096861 suits high-efficiency finishing passes where sharp edges and controlled chip flow are required.
This insert is intended for finishing applications including turning, boring, and facing on CNC turning equipment in both production and job-shop environments. The MF1 chip breaker geometry targets finishing cuts on stainless steel, steel, cast iron, and superalloys including titanium. It is well suited for setups requiring a secure clamp, pin, or lever-lock insert-holding method. The CP500 grade with its P, K, and S material classifications makes this insert applicable across a broad range of workpiece materials where moderate to high wear resistance combined with adequate toughness is needed.
Designed for use in CNGP-style turning toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, 80-degree diamond insert with negative rake and negative side clearance, conforming to ANSI insert code CNGP431 and ISO insert code CNGP120404.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Before changing inserts, confirm the machine is in an E-stop state and all spindle motion has ceased. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and secure via the appropriate clamping method — clamp, pin, or lever lock — before indexing or initiating a cut. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 0.4921 inch specified for this insert geometry.
