The SECO 00077931 is a carbide grooving insert designed for external threading and grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the CP500 manufacturer grade with a micrograin carbide substrate and a PVD-applied TiAlN and TiN multilayer coating for wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert uses a 20NR style profile with a 174 chip breaker geometry (FG), a cutting width of 0.174 inches, and a maximum depth of cut of 0.174 inches. It is held in place by a clamp-style toolholder and is configured for right-hand cutting. Minimum order quantity is 2 pieces; each package contains 1 insert.
This insert is rated for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering material grade codes H, K, M, N, O, P, and S under ISO classification. That range includes steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, and heat-resistant superalloys. It is used in high-production turning environments where consistent groove width and depth repeatability are required. The Snap Tap series tooling system it belongs to is commonly used in threading and grooving applications on both conventional and CNC lathes. Full-radius profiling is not supported by this insert geometry.
Designed for use with Snap Tap series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept 20NR inserts with a 0.500-inch inscribed circle. Consult toolholder documentation to confirm seat geometry and clamp compatibility before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before removing or installing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer for the clamp screw; do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
