The SECO 00077790 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert engineered for external NPT thread cutting at 11.5 threads per inch. Manufactured to the CP500 grade and finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability when threading stainless steel and other challenging workpiece materials. It follows the 16ER insert style and seats in compatible Snap-Tap toolholders. The A2 chipbreaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation during threading passes. At 0.1366 inches thick with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, this insert is sized for precision fitment in standard 16ER pockets. Qualified machinists and CNC lathe operators working in industrial, oil and gas, or mechanical piping applications are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for cutting external NPT tapered pipe threads on lathes and turning centers. The 60-degree included angle conforms to NPT thread form requirements for 3/8-inch nominal pipe sizes running at 11.5 TPI. Primary workpiece material designation is M, corresponding to stainless steel, though the CP500 grade and PVD coating also support threading in other moderate-to-hard materials. This insert is sold individually per package but must be ordered in multiples of two per the manufacturer minimum order requirement.
Designed for use in 16ER-style Snap-Tap threading toolholders for external NPT thread applications. Confirm toolholder pocket specifications match the 16ER insert style and 3/8-inch inscribed circle before installation.
Insert seating and torque should follow the toolholder manufacturer specifications for 16ER-style pockets. Power down and lock out the lathe or turning center before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct insert key to avoid damaging the seating pocket or the insert itself. Inspect the pocket seat for chips or debris before installing a new insert to ensure proper clamping and edge alignment.
