The SECO 00049956 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread cutting at 32 threads per inch (TPI). Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN finish, this insert is part of the Snap-Tap series and carries the CP500 grade designation. It features a 3/8-inch inscribed circle (IC), a thickness of 0.1366 inches, and a 60-degree included angle suited to unified thread-form geometry. The right-hand cutting orientation and ISO-standard construction make it a practical choice for threading operations on CNC lathes and turning centers in production or job-shop environments. Machinists and tooling specialists are the typical end users.
This insert is applied in external threading operations where UNJ thread standards are required, such as aerospace and precision mechanical assemblies that specify controlled root-radius thread forms. The CP500 grade with PVD coating supports cutting across a broad range of workpiece materials, including cast iron, nonferrous metals, nonmetallic materials, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys, as indicated by the primary workpiece material codes K, M, N, P, and S. It is suited for both light-production and high-volume threading runs where consistent thread quality is a priority.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for laydown threading toolholders accepting the 16ER insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and UNJ external thread form.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clear of the workpiece before seating or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert without cracking the carbide substrate. Verify thread-form alignment and first-pass engagement in a test cut before committing to full production runs.
