The SECO 00049941 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread cutting at 28 threads per inch (TPI). Part of the Snap-Tap series, this insert is manufactured from solid carbide in the CP500 grade and features a TiAlN/TiN PVD coating for extended tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The 16ER insert style has a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1366 inches. The 60-degree included angle and right-hand cutting geometry make this insert suited for precision external threading operations on CNC lathes and turning centers.
This insert is used in precision machining environments where UNJ thread forms are required, including aerospace, defense, and industrial manufacturing applications. The UNJ thread standard specifies a controlled root radius, making it common in high-stress fastener and fitting applications. The CP500 carbide grade with PVD coating supports use across universal workpiece material categories including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, non-metallic materials, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys (ISO material codes K, M, N, P, S). Installation is performed by machinists on CNC turning centers or manual lathes equipped with a compatible 16ER laydown threading toolholder. Ensure the machine is fully powered down and the spindle is locked before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully and evenly against the toolholder pocket, and secure with the appropriate clamping screw to the torque specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Do not use damaged or chipped inserts, as this can compromise thread form accuracy and tool integrity.
