The SECO 00049868 is a laydown-style threading insert designed for external UNJ thread cutting at 18 threads per inch (TPI). Made from solid carbide in the CP500 grade, it carries a TiAlN/TiN PVD coating for extended tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 60-degree included angle and a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, with a measured thickness of 0.1366 inches. It is sized and ground for right-hand external threading operations and belongs to the Snap-Tap series. CNC machinists and toolroom operators working on aerospace or precision-threaded components will encounter this insert in standard turret toolholders.
This insert is suited for external UNJ thread-form applications where close-tolerance thread profiles are required. The UNJ thread standard is commonly specified in aerospace and defense manufacturing due to its radiused root form, which reduces stress concentration. The CP500 carbide grade with PVD coating supports cutting across multiple material categories including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, non-metallic materials, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys, reflected in the workpiece material codes K, M, N, P, and S. It fits standard 16ER-series toolholders used on CNC lathes and turning centers.
Designed for use in 16ER-series laydown threading toolholders. Fits CNC lathes and turning centers accepting 16ER insert style in the Snap-Tap series. Specific machine compatibility depends on the toolholder used.
Installation is performed by machinists during tooling setup on CNC turning equipment. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver to secure the insert to the specified clamping torque indicated by the toolholder manufacturer. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure full, flat contact and accurate thread geometry.
