The SECO 00049861 is a laydown threading insert designed for external NPT thread cutting at 18 threads per inch (TPI). Built from solid carbide in the CP500 grade, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN finish for extended wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert follows the 16ER style geometry with a right-hand cutting orientation and a 60-degree included angle. With an inscribed circle of 0.375 inches and a thickness of 0.1366 inches, this insert is sized for precision threading in production and job-shop turning environments. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians on CNC and manual lathes equipped with compatible laydown toolholders.
This insert is suited for generating external NPT tapered pipe threads on a variety of materials, including ferrous alloys, stainless steels, aluminum, non-ferrous metals, and heat-resistant superalloys, consistent with its universal primary workpiece material rating. Typical applications include threading pipe fittings, hydraulic manifold ports, and fluid-system components where NPT sealing threads are required. It performs in both high-volume production runs and low-volume precision work. Designed as a laydown threading insert in the 16ER style, compatible with 16ER-series laydown threading toolholders that accept inserts with a 0.375-inch inscribed circle and 0.1366-inch thickness.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians on a powered-down, locked-out lathe or turning center before insert changes are made. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert clamp — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excessive clamping force. Verify that the insert seats fully and flush in the pocket before resuming cutting operations. Always confirm thread form accuracy with a go/no-go NPT gauge after setup.
