The SECO 00046738 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread turning operations. Built from solid carbide with a micrograin substrate and CP500 manufacturer grade, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN coating for extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert produces left-hand external UN threads at 20 threads per inch (TPI) with a 60-degree included angle. It features a 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch decimal) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1366 inches. This insert belongs to the Snap Tap series and is sized under the 16EL insert style code. It is installed by machinists and CNC lathe operators in production and job-shop environments.
This threading insert is suited for turning left-hand external UN threads on a wide range of workpiece materials. The primary workpiece material codes K, M, N, P, and S indicate universal applicability across cast iron, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. Typical applications include threaded fastener production, fixture components, and hydraulic fittings requiring left-hand UN thread forms. Designed for use in Snap Tap series laydown threading toolholders accepting 16EL style inserts. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against SECO Snap Tap series holder specifications prior to ordering.
Threading inserts are installed and indexed by machinists operating CNC or manual lathes. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing or indexing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench or insert clamping screw driver specified for the toolholder to secure the insert — do not overtighten or use impact tools on clamping screws. Confirm thread direction and insert hand orientation match the programmed toolpath before commencing the cut.
