The SECO 00040492 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TNMG-M5 series, designed for high-productivity metal removal on steel and stainless steel workpieces. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, which builds wear resistance and extends tool life under demanding cutting conditions. The triangular insert shape provides 6 cutting edges, and the M5 chip breaker geometry with a chamfered and honed cutting edge style delivers reliable chip control across a range of feeds and depths. Grade TP40 is suited to medium roughing and semi-finishing applications where consistent performance is required.
This insert is used in CNC lathes and turning centers for operations including turning, facing, boring, and back turning. It is a neutral-hand insert, making it compatible with standard TNMG-style toolholders used in both production and job-shop environments. Typical users include machinists and CNC operators working with steel and stainless steel components in industrial manufacturing settings. The insert accommodates a maximum depth of cut of approximately 0.5709 inches, making it capable of handling moderate material removal passes.
Designed for use in TNMG-style toolholders that accept clamp, pin, or lever-lock holding methods. Suitable for machining steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M) workpieces. Meets ANSI and ISO standards; ISO code TNMG160408-M5.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC operators. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before securing the insert. Index or replace the insert at the first sign of edge wear to prevent workpiece damage or toolholder failure.
