The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS TMLR285-16A is a solid carbide helical flute thread mill designed for cutting internal UNC 3/8-16 threads in machined components. Built from submicron carbide stock and finished with an AlTiN+ coating, this tool delivers heat resistance and edge durability in demanding CNC milling applications. It features 3 right-hand flutes, a 0.2850-inch cutting diameter, and a 3/4-inch length of cut, making it suitable for threading operations where a single-point tap would be impractical. Machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments rely on thread mills like this for precise, chip-controlled internal thread generation.
This thread mill is configured for long-reach internal threading applications on CNC machining centers. With a 3/8-inch shank diameter and 3.5-inch overall length, it is suited for reaching into deeper bores or workpiece geometries that restrict access. The UNC thread standard and 16 TPI designation make it appropriate for general-purpose fastener thread production in steel, aluminum, and similar machinable materials. No coolant-through feature is present, so external coolant or mist lubrication is the expected delivery method during cutting.
Designed as an OEM-style thread milling tool for use in CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation and programmed for internal UNC 3/8-16 thread forms.
This tool is installed by a machinist or CNC setup technician into a compatible collet or tool holder sized for a 3/8-inch shank. Confirm that the machining center spindle and tool holder runout are within acceptable tolerance before running, as excess runout accelerates edge wear on carbide thread mills. Program helical interpolation per the tool manufacturer guidelines and verify feed and speed parameters for the specific workpiece material. External coolant or mist lubrication should be directed at the cutting zone during operation.
