The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS TM 290-24H is a solid carbide helical flute thread mill designed for cutting 3/8-24 UNF threads in both internal and external applications. The tool features 4 right-hand flutes ground from submicron carbide, delivering clean thread forms in a single helical pass. With a cutting diameter of 0.29 inches and a length of cut of 0.808 inches, this mill handles the full thread depth needed for standard 3/8-24 UNF profiles. A bright, uncoated finish makes it well suited for use in non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other materials where coating buildup is a concern. CNC machining centers running appropriate thread-milling cycles are the intended platform.
This thread mill covers both internal and external 3/8-24 UNF thread production, making it a versatile single-tool solution for job shops, production machining, and toolroom work. The helical flute geometry reduces axial cutting forces compared to tap-style tooling, which is particularly useful in blind holes and hard-to-tap materials. The 5/16-inch shank diameter fits standard ER collet chucks and shrink-fit holders commonly found in CNC milling setups. It is appropriate for light-to-medium production runs where thread quality and dimensional accuracy are priorities.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation cycles; fits standard 5/16-inch collet chucks and shrink-fit toolholders for 3/8-24 UNF thread milling applications.
Thread milling requires a CNC control with helical interpolation capability and a properly configured thread-milling cycle - confirm cycle parameters, pitch, and lead direction before running. Secure the shank fully in a balanced toolholder and verify runout before cutting. Always power down the spindle and follow lockout/tagout procedures when changing or inspecting the tool. Do not use this mill as a tap; axial feed must be programmed as a helix, not a straight plunge.
