The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM240 is a single profile thread mill designed for cutting both internal and external threads across a range from 5/16-16 to 5/16-48 TPI. Built from submicron solid carbide, this tool delivers the rigidity and wear resistance required for precision threading operations in a production or toolroom environment. With a cutting diameter of 0.24 inches, a neck diameter of 0.153 inches, and a 4-flute geometry, the SPTM240 is suited for machinists and CNC operators who need reliable thread form accuracy across a broad TPI range in a single tool.
This thread mill is intended for use in CNC machining centers performing helical interpolation thread cycles on ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. Its single profile design allows one tool to produce multiple thread pitches from 16 to 48 TPI in the 5/16 thread size range, reducing tool inventory and changeover time. The bright/uncoated finish makes it well suited for non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, brass, and copper, as well as softer steels where coating is not required. Typical applications include precision component manufacturing, repair threading, and prototype work in job shop or production settings.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers with helical interpolation capability; accepts a 0.25 inch shank collet or end mill holder and is compatible with thread milling cycles requiring a 5/16 thread size across 16 to 48 TPI.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC setup technician using a standard collet chuck or end mill holder sized for a 0.25 inch shank. Verify runout at the spindle before cutting, as excessive runout will degrade thread form accuracy. Program the tool using a helical interpolation thread milling cycle appropriate to the target thread pitch and diameter. Confirm workpiece is rigidly fixtured and that the CNC control is set for the correct thread direction before beginning the cycle.
