The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM182LA is a solid carbide single profile thread mill designed to cut both internal and external threads across a wide range from 1/4-18 to 1/4-56, covering 18 to 56 TPI. Built from submicron-grade carbide and finished with an AlTiN+ coating, this tool delivers high wear resistance in demanding materials. The 4-flute geometry and 0.182-inch cutting diameter allow it to produce accurate thread forms in a single helical pass on a CNC machining center. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers working in production or job-shop environments rely on this tool class for threading flexibility without changing tooling for each pitch.
This thread mill is suited for use on CNC mills with helical interpolation capability. Its 1/4-18 to 1/4-56 range makes it a practical choice for shops producing threaded features across multiple pitch requirements in a single setup. The 0.650-inch length of cut accommodates standard thread depths for the supported size range. Both through and blind-hole threading applications are achievable, and external thread milling is supported as well. The AlTiN+ coating improves tool life in ferrous alloys, stainless steels, and other abrasive workpiece materials common in precision machining.
Designed for use on CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation; accepts standard 1/4-inch tool holding such as collet chucks and end mill holders compatible with a 1/4-inch shank diameter.
Installation and programming of thread mills requires a CNC machining center with helical interpolation and appropriate thread-milling cycle support. Secure the shank in a precision collet or end mill holder to minimize runout before use. Confirm spindle speed, feed rate, and helical pitch values are set correctly in the CNC program prior to cutting, as incorrect parameters are the primary cause of thread-form error or tool breakage. Always inspect the tool for chipping or coating wear before each use.
