The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM182A is a single profile thread mill designed to cut both internal and external threads across a range from 1/4-18 to 1/4-56, covering 18 to 56 TPI. Built from submicron-grade solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN+ coating, this tool delivers heat resistance and edge durability in demanding machining environments. The 4-flute geometry supports chip evacuation and surface finish quality on ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. With a cutting diameter of 0.182 inches and an overall length of 2.5 inches, it is sized for precision threading in confined bores and standard CNC milling setups. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users.
This thread mill is suited for CNC machining centers performing thread milling operations where a single tool must handle a range of thread pitches without a tool change. Its internal and external threading capability makes it a practical choice for shops threading both tapped holes and external stud profiles in the same setup. The 1/4-inch shank diameter fits standard ER and shrink-fit collet systems commonly used in vertical and horizontal machining centers. The 0.4-inch length of cut and 0.104-inch neck diameter allow reach into shallow-to-moderate depth thread features.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers with 1/4-inch collet or shrink-fit toolholders capable of thread milling cycles. Suitable for threading applications requiring 1/4-18 to 1/4-56 thread profiles in internal or external configurations.
Thread milling requires a CNC control with helical interpolation capability. Ensure the toolholder is properly torqued and the tool runout is verified before initiating a thread milling cycle, as excessive runout directly affects thread pitch diameter accuracy. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing or inspecting the tool. Follow the tool manufacturer and machine builder recommendations for cutting parameters appropriate to workpiece material and coolant strategy.
