The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM080A is a single profile thread mill engineered for cutting both internal and external threads in the 4-40 to 4-64 thread size range, covering 40 to 64 TPI. Built from submicron-grade solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN+ coating, it delivers hardness and thermal resistance needed for precision thread milling in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 3-flute geometry promotes chip evacuation and stable cutting action at small diameters. With a 0.08 inch cutting diameter and 0.19 inch length of cut, this tool is suited for tight-tolerance thread work in small bores and on external bosses across production and job shop environments.
This thread mill is designed for machinists and CNC operators working on small-diameter threaded features in a range of materials. Its single profile design means one tool handles multiple pitches within the 40 to 64 TPI range, reducing tooling inventory. The 3/16 inch shank diameter fits standard ER collet chucks and small-bore tool holders commonly found on VMCs, HMCs, and CNC turning centers with live tooling. It is well suited for aerospace, medical device, and precision instrument applications where small fastener thread forms require controlled fit and finish.
Designed as an OEM-style thread milling solution for CNC machining centers and live-tool lathes equipped with 3/16 inch collet or tool holder bores, targeting 4-40 to 4-64 thread form applications.
Thread milling is performed by a licensed machinist or CNC operator using helical interpolation cycles in the machine control. Verify spindle speed, feed rate, and helix pitch parameters in the CAM program or G-code before running the tool, as incorrect interpolation settings can result in thread form errors or tool breakage at this diameter. Ensure the tool holder is clean and properly torqued before spindle engagement. Because of the small neck diameter, avoid side loads and minimize runout at the spindle to protect tool integrity.
