The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM072L is a single profile thread mill designed for cutting fine-pitch threads in both internal and external applications. Built from submicron-grade solid carbide, it handles thread sizes from 3-48 to 3-72, covering a range of 48 to 72 TPI. The cutting diameter is 0.072 inches, the neck diameter is 0.040 inches, and the tool runs a 3-flute geometry that supports chip evacuation in tight bores. With an overall length of 2 inches and a bright uncoated finish, this tool is suited for machinists and toolroom technicians working precision thread-milling operations on CNC machining centers.
This thread mill is used in precision machining environments where small-diameter, fine-pitch threads are required in hard or abrasive workpiece materials. The single profile design allows one tool to mill a range of thread pitches within the 48 to 72 TPI window, reducing the number of dedicated taps or thread tools needed in the crib. Typical applications include aerospace components, medical device parts, and instrumentation hardware where thread quality and positional accuracy are critical. It is equally suited for both through-hole and blind-hole internal threads as well as external thread profiles on small-diameter features.
Designed for use on CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation, this tool is suited for thread sizes 3-48 through 3-72 in both internal and external configurations with a 3/16-inch shank for standard collet or end mill holders.
Thread milling requires a CNC control with helical interpolation capability. Secure the 3/16-inch shank in a precision collet or shrink-fit holder to minimize runout, as runout has a direct effect on thread quality at this diameter. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material and verify programmed thread depth before running the first part. Inspect the neck and cutting edges for chipping before each use, as solid carbide tools at this diameter are sensitive to side loads and interrupted cuts.
