The SANDVIK COROMANT 8021009 is a WPMT-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries ISO designation WPMT 04 02 04-PF 4415 and belongs to the WPMT-PF series. The insert is CVD-coated with a multilayer TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN stack, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted turning. The manufacturer grade is 4415, suited for machining cast iron and similar workpiece materials. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with a range of toolholders without directional restriction. Typical installers are CNC machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is used in external and internal turning applications where a W-shape (80-degree) insert geometry is required. The WPMT-PF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light roughing passes. The 0.0156-inch corner radius supports precise contouring and shoulder work. It is held in the toolholder by clamp or screw mounting methods. Applications include turning cast iron components, where the K-category secondary workpiece material code indicates suitability for gray cast iron, nodular cast iron, and similar materials. It is typically used in high-volume production turning on CNC equipment.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use turning insert for toolholders accepting WPMT 04 02 04 style inserts with clamp or screw holding. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against the WPMT-PF series toolholder specifications prior to installation.
Installation is performed by a CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is removed from the turret or secured before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces and tighten the clamp or screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert to prevent premature edge failure.
