The SANDVIK COROMANT 7861104 is a WNMG432-QM 4425 grade solid carbide turning insert engineered for steel and cast iron machining applications. It features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN that delivers high wear resistance with a balance of toughness suited to roughing and medium machining operations. The trigon 80-degree insert shape (W style) provides six usable cutting edges, improving cost-per-edge economics. With a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius (0.0313 inches), this insert fits standard WNMG toolholders using either clamp or screw holding. It belongs to the Sandvik T-Max P series for external turning.
This insert is suited to external turning operations on carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron workpieces in both roughing and medium-duty cuts. The QM chip breaker geometry is designed to manage chip control across varying depths of cut and feed rates typical in production turning environments. It is commonly installed in CNC lathes and turning centers by machinists and tooling technicians. The 4425 grade targets applications where high wear resistance is the primary requirement, with sufficient toughness to handle interrupted or variable stock conditions on steel components.
Designed for use in WNMG-style toolholders from the Sandvik T-Max P series. ANSI insert code WNMG432, ISO insert code WNMG080402. Fits toolholders configured for a 0.203-inch (5.16 mm) screw hole diameter with clamp or screw retention. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO code P); secondary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO code K).
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, locked-out state. Seat the insert fully in the pocket before applying clamp or screw torque to ensure proper contact with the locating surfaces. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before each index. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque specifications for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide substrate.
