The SANDVIK COROMANT 7861088 is a square-shaped, solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on steel workpieces. Carrying the ANSI insert code SNMG434 and ISO code SNMG 12 04 16-QM 4425, it features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN that delivers high wear resistance with a balance of toughness for demanding applications. The QM chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium machining cuts. The insert has a neutral hand orientation and a negative side clearance (N-type) with M-tolerance, making it compatible with standard SNMG-style clamp and screw-type toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for roughing and medium machining passes on steel (ISO material group P) in both shop and production settings. The 4425 grade provides high wear resistance to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it effective for continuous and lightly interrupted cuts at moderate to higher feed rates. The 1/16-inch corner radius helps manage chip formation and surface finish at typical roughing depths. It belongs to the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series, a platform widely used in general-purpose turning on CNC lathes and turning centers in both job shop and high-volume manufacturing environments.
Designed as a replacement turning insert for use in SNMG-style clamp and screw-type toolholders that accept a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick square insert. ANSI size code 434; ISO size code 120416. Part of the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series.
Installation and indexing of carbide turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped before any toolholder work begins. Use the appropriate torque driver specified for the toolholder clamping system — do not overtighten screw-type seats as this may fracture the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new insert. Always verify insert orientation, hand, and chip breaker direction match the programmed toolpath before resuming cutting operations.
