The SANDVIK COROMANT 7861056 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on steel and cast iron workpieces. Designated under the VCMT 11 03 04-PF 4425 ISO code, this insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a 7-degree relief angle and a 0.40 mm (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The CVD-applied multilayer coating stack — Al2O3, TiN, and TiCN — provides high wear resistance balanced with toughness, making it well-suited for the demands of steel finishing passes. The PF chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip formation at finishing feed rates. This insert carries 2 cutting edges and is designed for clamp or screw holding methods.
This insert is used in external turning applications where tight tolerances and fine surface finish are required on steel components. It is positioned in the CoroTurn 107 series, which targets positive-rake toolholders for finishing and light roughing on steel (ISO P) as the primary workpiece material, with cast iron (ISO K) as a secondary application. Typical installation scenarios include CNC lathes and turning centers in production machining shops, tool rooms, and repair facilities. Machinists and CNC operators select this grade when consistent tool life and surface quality are the priority over aggressive metal removal rates.
Designed for use in CoroTurn 107 series positive-rake toolholders that accept VCMT 11 03 insert geometry. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO P); secondary application is cast iron (ISO K). ANSI insert code VCMT1103 and ISO insert code VCMT1103 apply.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or toolroom technicians using standard insert clamp or screw-lock toolholders rated for VCMT 11 03 geometry. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clean and free of debris before seating the insert. Torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value — do not estimate by feel. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for wear or damage before each insert change to maintain positional accuracy.
