The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860977 is a solid carbide turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a TNMG 16 04 08-PM 4425 ISO designation and features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN for wear resistance and thermal stability. The triangular insert shape provides six usable cutting edges per insert, maximizing tool economy. With a manufacturer grade of 4425, this insert targets steel as its primary workpiece material and cast iron as its secondary application, delivering consistent performance at moderate to high cutting speeds.
This insert is suited for general turning of steel and cast iron components in production and job-shop environments. The PM chip breaker geometry controls chip formation across a broad range of feeds and depths, making it appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes. Typical installation scenarios include shaft turning, facing, and contour turning on mid-sized CNC lathes. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard right-hand or left-hand toolholders that accept TNMG-style inserts. Machinists and CNC operators in metalworking, automotive, and general manufacturing shops will find this insert a reliable choice for high-volume steel turning.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for TNMG-style toolholders in the T-Max P series that accept a 3/8 inch inscribed circle triangular insert with clamp or screw holding. ISO code TNMG 16 04 08-PM 4425; manufacturers catalog number TNMG 332-PM 4425.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and in an e-stop or lockout-tagout state. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamp or screw; verify the insert is flush and stable before resuming cuts. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris each time the insert is indexed. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for the specific clamping system in use.
