The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860821 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SCMT square geometry, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of cutting conditions. With a neutral hand orientation, a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle, a 0.40 mm (0.0156 inch) corner radius, and four usable cutting edges, it delivers reliable material removal rates in production turning environments. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators performing precision metal cutting work.
This insert is suited for turning steel as its primary workpiece material and cast iron as a secondary workpiece material. The PM chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium cutting conditions where chip control is critical. It is commonly used in general-purpose and production turning applications in automotive, aerospace, and general machining shops. The CoroTurn 107 series tooling system uses clamp and screw holding methods, making this insert a direct fit for compatible CoroTurn 107 toolholders.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT CoroTurn 107 series toolholders that accept SCMT-style square inserts with a clamp or screw holding method. ISO code SCMT 09 T3 04-PM 4425 and manufacturers catalog number SCMT 3(2.5)1-PM 4425 may be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder sizes.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to avoid seat damage or insert fracture. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Confirm proper insert orientation and hand designation before resuming cutting operations.
