The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860771 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert from the T-Max P series, designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries grade 4425 solid carbide substrate with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, delivering a balance of wear resistance and thermal stability suited to continuous and interrupted cuts. The 80-degree diamond (C) insert shape provides a strong cutting edge, while the WMX chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. The insert features a neutral hand orientation and four available cutting edges per insert, contributing to consistent tooling economics.
This insert is engineered primarily for steel machining (ISO P workpiece material code) with secondary suitability for cast iron (ISO K). It fits standard CNMG-style tool holders used in production turning environments, including finishing, semi-finishing, and moderate roughing passes. The wiper edge geometry supports improved surface finish at standard feed rates, making it appropriate for applications where part finish quality is a factor alongside material removal rate. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and tooling specialists in job shop and production machining environments.
Designed for use in CNMG-style indexable turning tool holders accepting a 1/4 inch inscribed circle insert with tolerance code M and clearance code N. Compatible with standard CNMG 16 06 12 holder pockets as indicated by ISO code CNMG 16 06 12-WMX 4425.
Insert seating and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and all energy sources locked out per applicable OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Verify the tool holder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper contact and clamping force. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping hardware when securing clamp or screw-style retention. Inspect cutting edges for wear or chipping at regular intervals and index or replace the insert before edge failure compromises part quality or workholding integrity.
