The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860717 is a square-shaped solid carbide turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Identified by ISO code SNMG 12 04 08-PM 4425, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN for high wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The PM chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip control across a broad range of feed rates and depths of cut. With a neutral hand orientation and 8 usable cutting edges, this insert is suited for production turning in machine shops, job shops, and heavy manufacturing environments.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning steel and cast iron workpieces in both roughing and semi-finishing applications. The 0.79 mm corner radius and 12.70 mm inscribed circle make it appropriate for medium to heavy material removal passes. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators using clamp or screw holding methods in compatible SNMG-style toolholders. The PM chip breaker designation targets consistent chip evacuation during interrupted or continuous cuts on ferrous materials, including low-alloy steels, carbon steels, and gray or ductile cast iron.
Designed for use in SNMG-style turning toolholders that accept a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick square insert. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). Refer to SANDVIK COROMANT toolholder selection guides for confirmed holder compatibility with the SNMG 12 04 08 insert size.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC operators following standard insert indexing procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the insert pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips before clamping. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque and seating procedure to avoid insert micro-fracture or poor seating.
