The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860696 is a CNMG-style turning insert from the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This solid carbide insert carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (ISO shape code C), a neutral hand orientation, and a PM chip breaker geometry. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 1.19 mm (0.0469 inch) corner radius, it is suited for medium to finishing passes where controlled chip formation is critical. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining steel (ISO material group P) and is also rated for cast iron applications (ISO material group K). It fits standard CNMG 12 04 12 toolholders that accept clamp-and-screw holding methods. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and profiling operations in production and job-shop environments. The PM chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium depths of cut and feed rates where chip control on ductile materials such as low- and medium-carbon steels is a priority. Each insert provides 4 usable cutting edges, reducing per-edge tooling cost in high-volume turning operations.
Designed for use in CNMG 12 04 toolholders that accept clamp-and-screw insert holding. Compatible toolholder systems must accommodate a 0.5-inch (12.70 mm) inscribed circle and a 3/16-inch (4.76 mm) insert thickness. ISO code CNMG 12 04 12-PM 4425 applies.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamp screw per the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the cutting edge for chipping or coating wear before each use and index or replace the insert as needed.
