The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860517 is a VBMT-style indexable turning insert from the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This solid carbide insert carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The 35-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code V) delivers a sharp, low-cutting-force geometry suited to finishing and semi-finishing passes. A 0.0156-inch (0.40 mm) corner radius and the UR chip breaker geometry make this insert well-matched to steel and cast iron turning at moderate depths of cut and feed rates.
This insert is intended for use in CoroTurn 107 toolholders that accept VBMT 16 04 04 geometry inserts. Typical applications include OD turning on low-alloy and unalloyed steels (ISO material group P) and gray or nodular cast irons (ISO material group K) in production and job-shop environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working on turning centers, engine lathes, and multi-tasking machines install these inserts as part of routine insert indexing and replacement cycles. The insert is held by clamp or screw, depending on the toolholder configuration in use.
Designed for CoroTurn 107 toolholders accepting VBMT 16 04 04 insert geometry. ISO code: VBMT 16 04 04-UR 4415. Industry standard number: VBMT 16 04 04-UR 4415. Compatible with toolholders using clamp or screw insert-holding methods. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO code P); secondary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO code K).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before indexing or replacing inserts, the machine spindle must be stopped, the program must be placed in feed hold, and all axes must be in a safe position per the machine manufacturer lockout procedure. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamp screw — do not over-torque. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and edge alignment.
