The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860470 is a WNMG432-WMX 4415 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Part of the T-Max P series, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiN, and TiCN that provides thermal barrier protection and wear resistance during high-speed steel and cast iron machining. The trigon (80-degree included angle) insert shape offers six cutting edges per insert, maximizing tool utilization. The WMX chip breaker geometry is engineered for medium turning conditions where controlled chip formation and surface finish consistency are required. A neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand and left-hand toolholders depending on setup.
This insert is suited for medium turning applications on steel (ISO material group P) and cast iron (ISO material group K) in both production shop and job shop environments. Typical installations include finishing and semi-finishing passes on turned components in automotive, general engineering, and heavy equipment manufacturing. The 0.0313-inch corner radius supports medium chip loads while maintaining surface finish integrity. The wiper edge feature allows increased feed rates without sacrificing surface quality, reducing cycle time on high-volume turned parts. A licensed machinist or CNC turning specialist performs installation and tool offset setup.
Designed for use with WNMG-style toolholders accepting clamp and screw holding methods. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO code P); secondary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO code K). ISO designation WNMG 08 04 08-WMX 4415 corresponds to industry standard number WNMG 08 04 08-WMX 4415. Compatible with T-Max P series tooling systems.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully and evenly in the pocket before torquing the clamping screw or clamp to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert pocket for chips, debris, or wear before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and accurate tool offset registration.
