The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860463 is a VNMG-style turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 35-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for both straight and profiling passes. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN, providing thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. With a 0.375-inch inscribed circle and a 0.4 mm corner radius, this insert is sized for medium-duty turning applications. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is intended for turning steel and cast iron workpieces in industrial machining environments. The PF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light roughing cuts on steel, where controlled chip formation is critical to surface finish and tool life. The ISO designation VNMG 16 04 04-PF 4415 identifies it within standard toolholder systems, and the grade 4415 substrate is suited for P-category (steel) and K-category (cast iron) applications. It is commonly used in automotive, general engineering, and contract machining operations where consistent insert geometry and coating performance are required.
Designed for use in standard VNMG toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 0.150-inch hole diameter. ISO designation VNMG 16 04 04-PF 4415 confirms fitment in any compliant VNMG 16 04 toolholder system. Primary workpiece materials are steel (P-category) and cast iron (K-category).
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians following machine tool manufacturer torque and clamping specifications for the toolholder in use. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all motion has ceased before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening clamp screws, and inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating a new edge. Follow your facility safety program and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when servicing cutting tools.
