The SANDVIK COROMANT 7859239 is a SNMG-style indexable turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries manufacturer grade 4415 and features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, making it well suited for steel and cast iron machining at productive cutting parameters. The square insert shape provides 8 available cutting edges, and the neutral hand orientation fits a wide range of toolholders. A 0.79 mm corner radius balances surface finish quality with edge strength across roughing and semi-finishing passes. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is intended for turning applications on primary workpiece materials classified as steel (ISO P) and secondary materials classified as cast iron (ISO K). The PM chip breaker geometry is optimized for continuous and interrupted cuts in these materials, helping control chip formation across a range of feeds and depths of cut. It is sized with a 1/2 inch (12.70 mm) inscribed circle and fits standard SNMG 12 04 toolholder pockets. Insert indexing and replacement should be performed with the machine spindle stopped and all axes at a safe position per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamping hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert with screw or clamp methods. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for debris or damage before indexing to a fresh cutting edge. Consult the toolholder manufacturer guidelines for proper clamp torque values, as over- or under-torquing can affect insert seating and cutting performance.
