The SANDVIK COROMANT 7859170 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert in grade 4415, engineered for productive metal cutting in steel and cast iron applications. It carries a tri-layer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN that resists crater wear and built-up edge at elevated cutting speeds. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (Shape Code C), a neutral hand orientation, a 1/2 inch (0.500 inch) inscribed circle, and a 0.40 mm (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The QM chip breaker geometry is designed to manage chip flow across a broad range of depths of cut and feed rates, reducing cutting forces on the workpiece. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for external and internal turning operations on steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K) workpieces in both roughing and semi-finishing passes. The T-Max P series is a platform commonly found on production turning centers and manual engine lathes wherever consistent chip control and tool life are priorities. It is sold individually, with a minimum order quantity of 10 pieces per order. Each insert provides four usable cutting edges, reducing per-edge tooling cost in high-volume turning environments.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders within the T-Max P series platform. Compatible with clamp and screw clamping systems. ISO code CNMG 12 04 04-QM 4415. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against insert dimensions before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench or T-key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening clamping screws — do not over-torque, as this can crack the insert or damage the pocket seating surface. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips, debris, or wear before seating a new insert.
