The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231505 is a WNMG432-XM 2220 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during high-speed and continuous turning operations. The XM chip breaker geometry controls chip flow across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. With an 80-degree trigon (W-shape) insert body and neutral hand orientation, this insert fits standard WNMG-style toolholders used throughout production turning environments. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 units.
This insert is suited for turning stainless steel and other ISO M workpiece materials in both roughing and semi-finishing applications. The T-Max P series is a widely used platform in production shops running medium to high material removal rates. The XM chip breaker is engineered for stainless steel, where chip control and edge stability are critical concerns. Typical users include CNC machinists and toolroom technicians operating turning centers in job shop, aerospace, food processing, and industrial manufacturing environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for standard WNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick trigon insert with a 0.2030-inch hole diameter. ISO designation WNMG 08 04 08-XM 2220 confirms fitment with compatible T-Max P and equivalent WNMG clamping systems.
Insert replacement and indexing should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to release the clamping screw or pin before removing the worn edge. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket before re-engaging the clamp to ensure accurate tool nose position. Verify insert hand orientation and chip breaker direction before resuming cutting.
