The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231504 is a WNMG432-QM 2220 series turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. This solid carbide insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. The trigon (W) insert shape provides an 80-degree included angle and six usable cutting edges per insert, improving tooling economy. With a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch insert thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius, this insert suits medium to finishing turning passes. The QM chip breaker geometry is optimized for stainless steel and other difficult-to-machine ISO M materials. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible T-Max P toolholders.
This insert is primarily intended for turning stainless steel and ISO M-class workpiece materials in production and job-shop environments. The QM chip breaker geometry handles the stringy, work-hardening chips common in austenitic and duplex stainless applications. Typical use cases include external and internal diameter turning on horizontal and vertical CNC lathes. The neutral hand orientation and clamp-and-pin holding method make it compatible with a wide range of standard WNMG toolholder styles used in both light and medium-duty turning operations.
Designed for use with WNMG-style toolholders in the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series. ISO code WNMG 08 04 08-QM 2220 enables cross-reference with compatible holders from other manufacturers that accept the WNMG 0804 insert seat. Intended for turning stainless steel and ISO M-class workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the clamp and pin to the manufacturer-specified tightening procedure without over-torquing the insert pocket screw. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a new insert to ensure accurate seating and repeatable tool geometry.
