The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231503 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ISO designation WNMG 08 04 08-MR 2220, designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It belongs to the T-Max P series and features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN that provides wear resistance and thermal protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert has a neutral hand orientation, a 1/2-inch (0.5000-inch) inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch (0.0313-inch) corner radius, making it well suited for general-purpose profiling and finishing passes on stainless steel and other M-code ISO workpiece materials.
The MR chip breaker geometry on this insert is engineered for medium to light-duty turning applications where controlled chip evacuation is critical, particularly when machining stainless steel and similar work-hardening alloys. The 80-degree trigon shape (insert shape code W) provides six usable cutting edges per insert, maximizing cost-per-edge value. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and contour turning on horizontal and vertical turning centers in production and job shop environments. The insert is held in the toolholder by clamp or pin methods, compatible with standard WNMG-style toolholders.
Designed for use in standard WNMG-style turning toolholders that accept clamp or pin holding methods. Compatible with toolholders sized for a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick trigon insert per ISO and ANSI WNMG 432 seating standards. Primary workpiece material classification is ISO M (stainless steel).
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, lockout-tagout state. Seat the insert firmly against all pockets walls before engaging the clamp or pin; an improperly seated insert can fracture under cutting load. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before each index. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque recommendations for the clamping screw; do not overtighten.
