The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231482 is a VBMT-style solid carbide turning insert in the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 35-degree diamond insert shape (Shape Code V) with a neutral hand orientation, a 1/4-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The insert is CVD-coated with a multilayer TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN stack under the manufacturer grade 2220. This combination delivers wear resistance and thermal stability well-suited for high-surface-finish and moderate-depth turning passes. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers specify this insert for production turning environments.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning stainless steel (ISO material group M, Primary Workpiece Material Code M). The MF chip breaker geometry is optimized for light-to-medium cutting depths where chip control on gummy, work-hardening materials is critical. Typical applications include external profile turning, facing, and light finishing passes on austenitic and ferritic stainless grades. It is also applicable to similar ISO M-group materials where a sharp, positive-geometry insert is required to reduce cutting forces and maintain dimensional accuracy. The screw-clamping insert-holding method suits standard VBMT-compatible toolholders.
Designed for use in VBMT-compatible screw-clamp toolholders within the CoroTurn 107 series. ISO code VBMT 11 03 08-MF 2220 identifies the insert for cross-referencing with compatible toolholder bores and seating pockets.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state. Use a calibrated torque wrench to seat the clamping screw per the toolholder manufacturer specification — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the toolholder pocket and locating pin for wear or debris before indexing to a fresh cutting edge. Verify insert seating and runout before resuming cutting operations.
