The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231481 is a VBMT-style solid carbide turning insert engineered for precision metal cutting in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Part of the CoroTurn 107 series, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, delivering strong wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The 35-degree diamond insert shape (Shape Code V) provides a sharp, acute cutting geometry suited for profiling and finishing operations. With a 0.25-inch inscribed circle and a 0.0156-inch corner radius, this insert is sized for light to medium depth-of-cut passes where edge sharpness and surface finish are the priority. It is installed via screw-holding method and carries a neutral hand designation, making it straightforward to spec into standard VBMT toolholders.
This insert is rated for primary use on stainless steel workpieces (ISO Material Code M), where the MF chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip formation and reduced cutting forces during finishing and semi-finishing passes. The CoroTurn 107 series is a widely used platform in production turning environments, and Grade 2220 is a recognized Sandvik Coromant designation for CVD-coated carbide suited to stainless and similar difficult-to-machine materials. Typical applications include external profiling, facing, and light roughing on CNC lathes running stainless steel components in industrial and precision manufacturing settings. This insert is handled and installed by machinists and CNC operators in tool rooms and production cells.
Designed for use in VBMT-style screw-clamped turning toolholders compatible with the CoroTurn 107 platform. ISO designation VBMT 11 03 04-MF 2220 can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder and insert seat specifications. Verify toolholder insert pocket geometry and screw size before installation.
Insert seating and indexing should be performed with the machine spindle locked and all power to the machine de-energized or the turret in a safe service position. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key for the clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not over-torque or use impact tools on the insert screw. Inspect the insert pocket seat for debris or damage before seating a new insert, as contamination will affect edge height and surface finish accuracy. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping the cutting edges prior to use.
