The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231447 is a solid carbide turning insert from the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries an ISO designation of TCMT 11 03 04-MM 2220 and features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN applied over a carbide substrate in grade 2220. The triangular insert shape provides three cutting edges, and the MM chip breaker geometry is optimized for stainless steel and other ISO M-group workpiece materials. With a 1/4-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert suits medium finishing and light roughing passes where edge sharpness and chip control are critical.
This insert is primarily intended for machining stainless steel (ISO material group M) in production turning environments. Typical applications include external longitudinal turning and facing on CNC lathes in job shops, general machining facilities, and manufacturing operations where consistent surface finish and tool life on difficult-to-machine alloys are priorities. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand toolholders accepting TCMT-style inserts. The screw-on insert holding method suits standard TCMT toolholder clamps with the appropriate screw and wrench.
Designed for use in TCMT-style screw-clamp turning toolholders accepting inserts with a 1/4-inch inscribed circle, 1/8-inch thickness, and a 2.80 mm (0.1102 inch) hole diameter. Compatible toolholders must conform to the TCMT insert pocket geometry per ISO standards. Verify toolholder specifications before ordering.
Indexing and insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a full stop and all axes locked. Use the manufacturer-specified torque wrench and insert screw to seat the insert firmly without over-torquing the mounting screw. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or wear before installing a new insert, as contamination will affect edge position and surface finish. Follow facility lockout/tagout procedures before any tooling change at the spindle.
