The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231382 is a DNMG432-QM 2220 indexable turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from carbide substrate with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, this insert offers strong wear resistance and thermal protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The 55-degree diamond shape (D) provides a versatile geometry for profiling and general turning. With a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle and a 0.0313-inch corner radius, it fits standard DNMG toolholders and suits machinists tackling stainless steel and other M-grade workpiece materials.
This insert is intended primarily for turning stainless steel in production and job-shop environments. The QM chip breaker geometry is suited for medium machining conditions where chip control on tough, work-hardening materials is a priority. It seats in clamp-and-pin style toolholders and offers four usable cutting edges per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost in high-volume turning applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working with austenitic or duplex stainless grades will find this geometry appropriate for moderate depths of cut and feed rates.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit insert for DNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, and 0.2030-inch hole diameter. ISO designation DNMG 15 04 08-QM 2220 can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder systems.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamp screw. Inspect the insert seat and shim for wear or debris before seating a new edge to ensure proper contact and runout.
