The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231328 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for general turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the T-Max P series designation and is manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. It is intended for machinists and CNC operators working with stainless steel workpieces where edge toughness and coating adhesion are critical to tool life.
This insert is suited for external and internal profile turning of stainless steel components in job shops, production machining, and repair environments. The QM chip breaker geometry is configured for medium machining conditions, offering reliable chip control across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. The four available cutting edges per insert make it a cost-effective choice for medium-volume production runs. The clamp-and-pin holding method suits standard CNMG-compatible toolholders used in both conventional and CNC turning setups.
Designed for use in CNMG-style indexable turning toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin retention. ISO designation CNMG 12 04 08-QM 2220 can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder systems. Primary workpiece material is stainless steel (ISO material code M).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. The machine spindle must be stopped and all axes locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before installing a new edge to ensure proper seating and runout control.
