The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231312 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which builds wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting zone. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C), a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius, making it well suited for medium-duty finishing and semi-finishing passes. The MR chip breaker geometry controls chip flow effectively on difficult-to-machine materials. This insert is installed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians in production and job-shop environments.
The 7231312 is engineered primarily for stainless steel (ISO material group M) but is applicable across a range of challenging work materials where controlled chip formation and coating durability are priorities. It mounts via screw-clamp holding in compatible CoroTurn 107 toolholders. The neutral hand orientation allows use on both straight turning and light profiling applications. Typical use cases include OD turning of stainless steel components in aerospace, food processing, medical, and general manufacturing industries where surface finish and tool life consistency are critical.
Designed for use in CoroTurn 107 series screw-clamp toolholders that accept CCMT 09 T3 insert seats. The ISO code CCMT 09 T3 08-MR 2220 can be used to verify fitment against compatible toolholder specifications. Primary workpiece material designation is ISO Group M (stainless steel).
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and seating procedure for screw-clamp CCMT-style pockets. Ensure the insert pocket and clamping screw threads are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Never force an insert into a pocket — improper seating can cause insert fracture or poor surface finish. Follow all machine guarding and lockout-tagout procedures before changing inserts on live equipment.
