The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231311 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT style, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the grade designation 2220 and features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN for extended wear resistance and thermal stability. The insert has a neutral hand orientation, an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C), a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 5/32-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. Part of the CoroTurn 107 series, this insert is held in place by a screw-clamping method and is intended for installation by machinists or tooling technicians working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is optimized for turning stainless steel and other ISO M-group workpiece materials, making it well suited for applications where built-up edge resistance and chip control are critical. The MM chip breaker geometry is engineered to manage chip flow across a range of depths of cut and feed rates typical of stainless steel finishing and semi-finishing passes. It is appropriate for both high-volume production turning and precision part work where surface finish and dimensional consistency are priorities.
Designed for use in CoroTurn 107 series toolholders that accept CCMT 09 T3 08 inserts (ISO code CCMT 09 T3 08-MM 2220). Compatible toolholders must accommodate a screw-clamping insert holding method and the CCMT insert geometry with a 0.1732-inch hole diameter.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before indexing or replacing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the control is in a safe state. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw to proper engagement — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Verify insert seating and pocket cleanliness before resuming cuts, and confirm that the replacement insert grade and geometry match the application requirements.
