The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231289 is a CCMT-style indexable turning insert from the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for external and internal turning operations on stainless steel and other ISO M-group materials. The insert carries an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a 7-degree relief angle and a positive side clearance, giving it a sharp, free-cutting geometry suited to both roughing and medium machining passes. The CVD-applied multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN — provides high wear resistance with retained toughness. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, the insert fits compact toolholders common in Swiss-style, live-tool, and conventional turning centers. Installed by machinists and CNC operators, this insert is a screw-lock type with two usable cutting edges per insert.
The CCMT32.51-UM 2220 is engineered primarily for stainless steel (ISO M) workpieces where controlled chip evacuation and edge stability are critical. The UM chip breaker geometry handles roughing to medium depths of cut, making it a practical choice for general-purpose stainless turning where a single insert grade must cover varied cut conditions. The CoroTurn 107 series is a well-established platform for positive-rake turning, and this insert slots into standard CCMT-compatible toolholders used across production and job-shop turning environments.

This insert is installed by machinists or CNC operators and requires powering down and locking out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified method; do not overtighten, as this can fracture carbide. Inspect the insert pocket and screw for wear or debris before seating a new edge. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA machine-guarding requirements during insert changes.
