The SANDVIK COROMANT 6971889 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in indexable face and shoulder milling cutters. Manufactured to the 490 series standard and identified by ANSI and ISO code 490R-08T316M-PH 1130, this insert features an AlTiCrN coating applied via PVD process, which delivers strong wear resistance at elevated cutting temperatures. The square insert geometry includes four right-hand cutting edges with a positive rake angle of 22 degrees and a corner radius of 0.0630 inches. It is intended for installation by machining professionals in production and job-shop environments working with high-volume or precision milling operations.
This insert is suited for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, corresponding to material grade designations P30, M15, and N15. The PH chip breaker geometry supports stable chip control across a range of cutting conditions. With a maximum depth of cut of 5.50 mm (0.2165 inches), this insert is appropriate for light to medium roughing and semi-finishing applications on vertical and horizontal machining centers where the 490 cutter series is employed.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT 490 series milling cutter bodies. The insert size code 08T316 and ANSI/ISO designation 490R-08T316M-PH 1130 should be matched to the cutter body specification before installation.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and machine placed in a locked-out, tagged-out state per applicable facility safety procedures. Use the correct Torx or hex key as specified by the cutter body manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not over-torque. Inspect the cutter pocket seating surface and screw threads for damage or debris before seating the new insert. Rotate to a fresh cutting edge before replacing the insert entirely to maximize insert utilization.
