The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868517 is a CVD-coated carbide turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on cast iron workpieces. It carries the ANSI insert code CNMG433 and the ISO designation CNMG 12 04 12-KM 3225. The three-layer coating stack — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN applied by CVD — delivers high wear resistance across a range of material hardness levels. The KM chip breaker geometry is engineered for roughing and medium machining operations. With four usable cutting edges and a negative side clearance, this insert offers a low cost-per-edge in high-volume cast iron turning applications. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for roughing and medium machining of cast iron components in both production shop and job shop environments. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape provides a strong cutting edge with good access to typical turning profiles. The KM chip breaker is rated for cast iron grades requiring high wear resistance to high toughness, making this insert appropriate for interrupted cuts and variable stock conditions common in gray and ductile iron turning. The insert seats via clamp or pin holding methods, compatible with standard CNMG-style toolholders.
Designed for use in CNMG433-style toolholders that accept clamp or pin holding methods. Primary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO material group K). Refer to SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P toolholder documentation to confirm seat and clamping compatibility before use.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine in a full stop and lockout-tagout procedures followed per shop safety standards. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert seating tool as specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not over-torque the clamp screw. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Verify chip breaker orientation relative to feed direction before resuming cutting.
