The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868497 is a trigon-style carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on cast iron workpieces. Designated under the ANSI code WNMG431 and ISO code WNMG080404, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN that delivers high wear resistance across a range of cast iron grades. The 80-degree included angle and KF chip breaker geometry are tuned for finishing cuts, controlling chip formation while maintaining tight tolerances on the workpiece surface. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand and left-hand toolholders designed for WNMG-style inserts. Installed by CNC machinists and turning center operators in production environments.
This insert belongs to the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series, which is engineered for external turning on lathes and turning centers. Its primary application is finishing passes on cast iron components where surface finish quality and dimensional accuracy are the priority. The KF chip breaker designation targets low-to-moderate feed finishing operations. With a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch insert thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert fits standard WNMG-size pockets and is suited for both small-batch precision work and higher-volume production runs on cast iron parts.
Designed for use in toolholders accepting WNMG-style inserts with an ANSI size code of 431 and ISO size code 080404. Part of the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series for external turning applications.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seat preparation guidelines. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping pin for wear or debris before installation to ensure proper seating and prevent insert rocking. Do not exceed the recommended maximum depth of cut for the insert size and workpiece material combination.
