The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868402 is a carbide turning insert from the T-Max series, designed for precision metal turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. The insert features a 60-degree triangle shape (shape code T) with a TiCN and Al2O3 CVD coating applied over a grade 3225 carbide substrate, providing wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. Key dimensional specs include a 0.25-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0156-inch corner radius, and a 0.125-inch insert thickness. The cutting edge style is rounded with a neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for both right-hand and left-hand toolholders.
This insert is intended for use in general turning applications where a triangular insert geometry is specified. The 11-degree relief angle (clearance code P) and tolerance code U classify it for utility-grade fitment in standard toolholding systems. It is appropriate for external and internal turning passes where a maximum depth of cut up to 10.60 mm is required. The chip breaker designation is N, indicating no chip breaker, which suits finishing and light-to-moderate roughing passes where chip flow management is handled by the toolholder geometry or part setup. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance machining environments are the typical end users.
Designed for use in T-Max series clamp-style toolholders that accept TPU-style triangular turning inserts with an insert size code of 221. ISO designation for this insert is TPUN 11 03 04 3225.
Turning insert replacement is performed by CNC machinists and lathe operators following standard cutting tool changeout procedures. Shut down the spindle and confirm the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before accessing the toolholder. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to release and re-seat the clamping screw to the correct torque. Inspect the insert pocket and shim for wear or debris before seating the new insert.
