The SANDVIK COROMANT 6635048 is a spiral point tap designed for threading operations in a wide range of metalworking applications. It cuts a 1/8-28 G thread form with a plug chamfer entry and three flutes that push chips forward through the hole, keeping the cutting zone clear during through-hole tapping. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and finished with an AlCrN coating that improves surface hardness and heat resistance at the cutting edge. Overall length is 3.7 inches with a thread length of 0.71 inches. Shank diameter is 0.28 inches. Right-hand thread direction. Part of the Sandvik Coromant CoroTap 200 series. Intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals on CNC and manual tapping equipment.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys. The 5H/2B class of fit is appropriate for standard precision threading requirements in production and maintenance machining environments, both job-shop and industrial. The G thread standard is commonly specified in fluid and pneumatic fittings, making this tap relevant to plumbing, HVAC, and instrumentation assembly work where BSP-style pipe thread connections are required. No coolant-through capability; external coolant or cutting fluid delivery is standard practice for this tool.
Compatible with steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys as stated by the manufacturer. Designed for through-hole tapping on CNC machining centers and manual tapping machines accepting standard straight-shank tap holders sized for a 0.28-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and holder selection for high-speed steel taps. Power down and lock out any machine spindle before loading or unloading the tap in its holder. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound to protect the cutting edge and improve thread finish, particularly in stainless steel and high-temperature alloys. Do not reverse the tap without confirming the machine cycle is programmed for synchronized rigid tapping to avoid flute damage.
