The SANDVIK COROMANT 6428061 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for square-shoulder and face milling operations in the R390 cutter series. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert measures 17 mm wide and 4.76 mm thick, with a 1.60 mm corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 15.70 mm. Grade 3330 is formulated for cutting cast iron. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments requiring reliable tool life on ferrous materials.
The 6428061 is used in horizontal and vertical milling setups where the R390 cutter series is mounted. Primary application is cast iron machining, including gray iron, ductile iron, and similar K-group workpiece materials. The KM chip breaker geometry suits medium-depth passes where chip control and edge stability are priorities. The right-hand, single-sided configuration with a positive rake angle of 17 degrees reduces cutting forces and is well suited to lower-power machine tool setups. Two cutting edges are available per insert before the insert is indexed or replaced.
Designed for use in SANDVIK COROMANT R390 series milling cutters. Insert size code 170416 and ANSI/ISO designation R390-17 04 16M-KM 3330 confirm fitment within the R390 cutter family. Verify cutter body pocket geometry before installation.
Installation is performed by machinists or tooling technicians; the machine spindle must be locked and all power isolated before changing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key specified for the R390 cutter body to seat the screw to proper engagement without over-torquing the carbide insert. Inspect the pocket seating surface and shim for damage before placing the new insert. Handle solid carbide inserts with care to avoid edge chipping during installation.
