The SANDVIK COROMANT 6042790 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ISO designation CNMG 12 04 08-KRR 3210 and belongs to the T-Max P series, engineered for reliable performance in external and internal turning applications. The insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous or interrupted cuts. A neutral hand orientation and 80-degree diamond geometry deliver strong cutting edges suited to roughing and medium turning passes on cast iron workpieces.
This insert is intended for use in turning operations where the primary workpiece material is cast iron, designated material code K. It fits standard CNMG-style toolholders using clamp and pin holding methods, making it a direct fit in common external turning setups on both CNC and manual lathes. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in production environments will find the KRR chip breaker geometry well matched to cast iron chip control requirements. The T-Max P series is a widely used platform in industrial turning, supporting consistent tool changes and predictable tool life across high-volume operations.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for CNMG-style toolholders using clamp and pin clamping, compatible with the T-Max P series insert platform. Verify toolholder seat geometry and insert size code 432 before installation.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Seat the insert fully against the pocket and tighten the clamp or pin fastener to the toolholder specification. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for wear or debris before installation to ensure proper seating and edge repeatability. Do not force the insert into the pocket, as improper seating can cause premature edge failure or toolholder damage.
